Description: This presentation will provide practitioners and teachers with practical information on the importance of developing and treating social competence in children with problems processing and integrating sensory information using a small group format within a sensory integration intervention framework. These groups have been applied successfully in both school-based and clinic-based practices with children having a range of diagnoses and skill levels.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this webinar viewers will be able to:

  1. Describe the importance of social competence in a child’s development.
  2. Identify 3 ways that sensory processing and motor performance problems can interfere with the development of a child’s social competence.
  3. Describe 3 social group activities which may be implemented within a sensory integration framework.

Course Level: Intermediate. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Suitable For: Occupational therapists, OT assistants, physical therapists, PT assistants and students, speech and language therapists.

About the Speaker: Wilma Dorman, OTR/L is the owner of OTR, Inc., a small pediatric occupational therapy practice with a focus on children and families with complex issues.  She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and has received the master clinician award from both the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association and Thomas Jefferson University School of Occupational Therapy. She specializes in interventions promoting the development of social competence using a small group format.  She is co-author of the book Promoting Social Competence with Dr. Gordon Williamson.
