Description: Occupational therapists are skilled at using materials in creative and innovative ways to support their clients’ functional engagement in meaningful occupations. This workshop will explore the therapeutic power of Lycra, a versatile, dynamic fabric used by OTs to support postural, social, and emotional outcomes. Participants will develop clinical reasoning using Lycra within a relational approach to support felt safety, regulation, and postural adaptation. A variety of intervention strategies will be introduced using Lycra in multiple mediums. Integrating this therapeutic modality into the context of a relationship-based sensory integrative approach will be discussed.

This course will be conducted live online via Zoom. The lecture will utilize a PowerPoint presentation, video, and case scenarios. Ample time will be provided for participants to ask questions and engage with the material. Course Schedule:

  • Introduction to the modality of Lycra, its properties and affordances, and the history of its use in pediatric sensory integrative occupational therapy intervention. (20 mins)
  • Clinical reasoning for the use of Lycra as a therapeutic modality within a relational approach to support felt safety. (15 mins)
  • Clinical reasoning for the use of Lycra as a therapeutic modality within a relational approach to support regulation. (20 mins)
  • Clinical reasoning for the use of Lycra as a therapeutic modality within a relational approach to support postural adaptation. (25 mins)
  • Exploration of practical applications: Using Lycra in a variety of mediums, including the Boundex, layers of suspended Lycra sheets, tunnels, body socks, and circle bands. (30 mins)
  • Introduction to a variety of practical strategies through observation of the therapeutic power of Lycra. (25 mins)
  • Video and case analysis: Demonstration of the impact of Lycra on postural, social and emotional outcomes and its effectiveness when working with children and families. (30 mins)
  • Questions and answers (15 mins)

Learning Objectives: By the end of this course the participant will be able to:

  1. Analyze the properties and affordances of Lycra as a therapeutic modality in the treatment of complex trauma and attachment challenges.

  2. Describe the therapeutic impact of Lycra in the clinical areas of felt safety, regulation, and postural adaptation.

  3. Apply three or more specific intervention strategies/activities using Lycra to support children and families impacted by trauma.

About the Speakers:

Jaymie Stavdal, MS, OTR/L: Jaymie earned her Master of Science degree in occupational therapy, graduating Summa Cum Laude and as Valedictorian of her class at the University at Buffalo in New York. As an occupational therapist, she specializes in sensory integration and has extensive training in trauma/attachment, sound therapies (Therapeutic Listening and Integrated Listening Systems), oral motor/feeding, and craniosacral therapy. She is also a practitioner in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). Jaymie has experience working with children and families in the home, school, and clinic setting, as well as running parent/child community-based sensory motor groups and summer camps.

Patti Oetter, MA, OTR/L, FAOTA Ms. Oetter earned her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from the University of Kansas and her master’s degree in special education, with special emphasis on education and learning difficulties, from Hays Kansas University. Ms. Oetter has extensive clinical experience in Sensory Integrative therapy, Samonas Sound Therapy, Cranial Sacral Therapy, and Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT).  She has provided consultation and education for teachers, parents, and therapists in the US, Asia, and Europe and she has worked extensively in schools, special programs, and private practice. She is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association. Ms. Oetter has co-authored a number of publications related to the treatment of sensory processing disorders including; “MORE: Integrating the Mouth with Sensory and Postural Functions” and “Out of the Mouths of Babes: The Developmental Significance of the Mouth.”
