Description: This course equips participants with advanced strategies to enhance ideational abilities in children with praxis deficits. It addresses challenges related to generating ideas and plans for action, common in children with sensory integration and praxis deficits, including those with autism spectrum disorder. The novel intervention approach introduced in this course focuses on recognizing and acting on action and object affordances, along with strengthening the ability to navigate representational thought, which underlies ideational praxis. Additionally, the course explores the link between ideation in praxis and executive function skills. Video tape examples and case study presentations will be used to illustrate intervention techniques. The course format, a combination of lecture, videotapes, and small group discussion allows opportunities for participant’s’ questions and concerns. Learning Objectives: By the end of this course the participant will be able to:
- Appraise behaviors indicative of ideational problems.
- Formulate several bottom-up intervention strategies for fostering the development of object and action affordances.
- Integrate a top-down intervention approach to foster representational thought necessary for ideational praxis.
- Justify the relationship between ideational problems and other cognitive challenges, including executive function skills.
- Devise a comprehensive treatment plan for effectively addressing ideational praxis difficulties.
Audience: OT/OTA, PT/PTA, SLP (with background in SI)

About the Speaker: Dr. Teresa May-Benson, ScD, OTR/L, FAOTA is an expert occupational therapist renowned for her clinical research, mentoring and education related to related to sensory integration theory and intervention, praxis, and social competency. She is currently the owner/CEO of TMB Education, LLC and serves as President and practicing occupational therapist at OTR, Inc, a private occupational therapy practice specializing in sensory integration and social competency for children and adults across the lifespan, located near Philadelphia, PA. Dr. May-Benson has a diverse background as a clinical practitioner, having worked in private and public-school settings as well as private practice. She has authored numerous book chapters and articles on praxis and sensory integration and completed her doctoral dissertation on ideational praxis. Teresa is an education and research faculty member at the SPIRAL Foundation. In her role of educator, she currently serves as adjunct faculty at Widener University and is past faculty at Tufts University and the University of Indianapolis. She has received the Virginia Scardinia Award of Excellence from AOTA for her work in ideational praxis and is the 2023 recipient of the AOTF A. Jean Ayres Award.
