Families experience stress during periods of change, especially when it’s a novel situation like a pandemic. This stress can lead to periods of emotional dysregulation for all family members. We know from the adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) research that these experiences can have long term effects on individuals, especially those who have experienced toxic stress. Toxic stress is a “prolonged activation of the stress-response system in the absence of a safe, secure caregiving relationship”. As caregivers and occupational therapy professionals, how can we nurture that safe secure caregiving relationship? What is the role of the occupational therapy professionals in trauma informed care? How can we engage our therapeutic use of self to establish effective relationships in our settings? Come join us as we explore these questions and discuss strategies to address these challenging times.
By the end of this LiveTalk listeners will be able to:
- Identify occupational therapist professional’s role in trauma informed care
- Describe importance of therapeutic use of self in establishing therapeutic relationships
- Identify a ““meltdown recipe” to utilize with individuals who are experiencing emotional dysregulation.
