Description: ‘Improving Social Interaction and Play Skills in Children with Autism,’ will address important elements needed for the development of play skills. Strategies to promote social interaction in children with autism will provided and the relationship of social interaction to play skills will be discussed. Specific intervention strategies, designed for parents, teachers, and therapists to use at home and in the school, to to facilitate development of these skills will also be provided.
By the end of this webinar viewers will be able to:
- Identify at least 3 strategies to support play skills development in children.
- Describe the relationship between social interaction and play skills development in children with autism.
- Identify 3 problems in nonverbal thinking which can interfere with play skills development in children with autism.
Course Level: Introductory. There are no prerequisites for this course.

About the Speaker: Sarah Friel, MA, CCC-SLP trained as a speech therapist in London, UK, where she gained her professional degree at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She gained her post-professional masters in Philosophy and Linguistics at the University of London. Over the last 23 years her career has been focused on pediatric caseloads in a wide variety of settings such as schools, hospitals and in-home therapy. Before moving to the USA, Sarah was an assistant professor of speech pathology at the university of Reading, UK, and senior specialist SLP in cleft palate, and craniofacial disorders at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, London. She moved to the USA in 2004 where she taught and conducted research in pre-school education at the University of Virginia. Sarah is trained in the Hanen© programs: ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ and ‘Learning Language and Loving It’ and is passionate about working with families in a functional way to improve communication skills at home and at school.
