Description: This webinar will briefly summarize research findings on the developmental pathway of play in children with autism. It will then provide strategies for parents and professionals to encourage autistic children to engage in interactive play.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this webinar viewers will be able to:

  1. Identify ages and major stages of play development in typically developing children and children with ASD.
  2. Recognize the developmental barriers that hinder children with ASD in engaging in interactive play.
  3. Implement appropriate strategies to engage children with ASD in play.

Course Level: Intermediate. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Suitable For: Occupational therapists, OT assistants, physical therapists, PT assistants, speech and language therapists, teachers, and educators.

About the Speaker: Sarah Friel, MA, CCC-SLP trained as a speech therapist in London, UK, where she gained her professional degree at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She gained her post-professional masters in Philosophy and Linguistics at the University of London. Over the last 23 years her career has been focused on pediatric caseloads in a wide variety of settings such as schools, hospitals and in-home therapy. Before moving to the USA, Sarah was an assistant professor of speech pathology at the university of Reading, UK, and senior specialist SLP in cleft palate, and craniofacial disorders at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, London. She moved to the USA in 2004 where she taught and conducted research in pre-school education at the University of Virginia. Sarah is trained in the Hanen© programs:  ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ and ‘Learning Language and Loving It’ and is passionate about working with families in a functional way to improve communication skills at home and at school.
