Description: In conjunction with AOTA joining the Choosing Wisely Campaign, SPIRAL will be offering a series of LiveTalks in 2021 to assist occupational therapy practitioners and other professionals to apply the recommendations made by AOTA while using the Sensory Integration Frame of Reference within diverse populations.The primary focus of the talks will target the recommendation: “Don’t provide sensory based interventions to individual children or youth without documented assessment results of difficulties processing or integrating sensory information”. Each guest will join us for two conversations on each population area, the first will focus on assessment and the second will focus on intervention. We will begin the series with the Autism Spectrum Disorder population, then move through Praxis, Trauma, Schools and finish with Adults. Our speakers include Renee Watling, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, Teresa May-Benson, ScD, OTR/L, FAOTA, Maude LeRoux, OTR/L, and Anne Trecker, MS, OTR/L.
In Part Four of 2021 Live Talk Series, Anne Trecker, OTR/L, consultant to the Boston Public School system and former director of the SPIRAL Foundation, will join us to discuss current trends in assessment and intervention for sensory integration challenges and how to apply the Choosing Wisely® recommendations in school-based settings. Anne will use case examples from her years of working with the Boston Public Schools to illustrate how she would apply these recommendations. Specific topics to be addressed include addressing challenges in the school setting accessing evidence-based SI assessments and developing occupation-based and purposeful interventions.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this LiveTalk participants will be able to:
- List evidence-based assessments and interventions for the school-based population
- Select purposeful activities during intervention for the school-based population
- Recognize when it is appropriate to use cognitive-based interventions with the school-based population
About the Speaker: Anne is a certified and licensed occupational therapist. She received a Masters of Occupational Therapy degree from Boston University, and previously received an MFA in Dance from the University of Illinois. Anne was an occupational therapist and sensory integration specialist with the Boston Public Schools, and she currently works for the school system as a sensory integration consultant. Prior to working for the Boston Public Schools, she was a therapist, and then the Clinical Director of Occupational Therapy Associates-Watertown. In these positions she worked with children with a wide range of disabilities, with special emphasis on children with autism. She has lectured on sensory integration theory and intervention throughout the U.S., and presents frequently for parent and teacher groups in the Boston area. In addition, she was the founding Executive Director of The Spiral Foundation at OTA-Watertown.
