Description: This lecture will discuss the evidence related to sensory integration deficits and sensory-based interventions in adults and adolescents with sensory processing and integration problems.  While sensory integration intervention is routinely provided to children, there is increased awareness that older adolescents and adults also present with sensory integration and processing deficits that might benefit from intervention. This talk will explore the evidence examining types of sensory processing problems in adolescents and adult (including geriatircs), functional implications and challenges related to these difficulties, and research on intervention modalities and strategies with this population.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this LiveTalk listeners will be able to:

  1. Describe the literature which identifies sensory integration and processing problems in adolescents and adults.
  2. State at least 3 ways that sensory processing and integration problems frequently impact functional performance in adults.
  3. Identify at least 3 sensory-based interventions and/or activities which might be applicable to adults with sensory processing and integration problems.

Course Level: Introductory. There are no prerequisites for this course.

About the Speaker: Teresa A. May-Benson, ScD, OTR/L, FAOTA is the Executive Director of the Spiral Foundation as well as a practicing occupational therapist at OTA The Koomar Center. She is active in conducting research related to sensory integration through the Spiral Foundation’s Sensory Processing Research Center and Laboratory. She is a well-known lecturer and researcher on sensory integration theory and intervention, has authored book chapters and articles on praxis and sensory integration, and completed her doctoral dissertation on ideational praxis. Dr. May-Benson received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and her master’s degree from Boston University with a concentration in sensory integration and school system therapy. She was a Maternal and Child Health Fellow in the Doctoral Program in Therapeutic Studies at Boston University. She has received the Virginia Scardinia Award of Excellence from AOTA for her work in ideational praxis.
