Description: Occupational therapists are increasingly being asked to use new methods of service delivery to support families, and many practitioners are turning to technology such as Telehealth to meet this demand. This distance approach to intervention may be particularly challenging for therapist working in the area of sensory integration The focus of this webinar will be on providing home-based sensory and motor treatment ideas and resources for therapists to use while navigating this new frontier. This course will also review concepts of Telehealth for Occupational Therapy including ways to create a Telehealth session based on sensory integration principles. Specific ways to incorporate occupational performance coaching to facilitate children’s sensory and motor goals into these sessions will also be addressed. In addition, ideas to help parents support their children will be presented, including sensory strategies for family routines and ways to facilitate home learning.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize the AOTA position paper on Telehealth
  2. Organize a Telehealth occupational therapy session while applying Sensory Integration principles
  3. Identify ways to use occupational performance coaching in therapy sessions
  4. Identify ways to help parents to utilize sensory strategies during family routines and incorporate school accommodations during home learning.

Course Level: Intermediate. There are no prerequisites for this course.

About the Speakers: Anne Trecker is a certified and licensed occupational therapist. She received a Masters of Occupational Therapy degree from Boston University, and previously received an MFA in Dance from the University of Illinois. Anne was an occupational therapist and sensory integration specialist with the Boston Public Schools, and she currently works for the school system as a sensory integration consultant. Prior to working for the Boston Public Schools, she was a therapist, and then the Clinical Director of Occupational Therapy Associates-Watertown. In these positions she worked with children with a wide range of disabilities, with special emphasis on children with autism. She has lectured on sensory integration theory and intervention throughout the U.S., and presents frequently for parent and teacher groups in the Boston area. In addition, she was the founding Executive Director of The Spiral Foundation at OTA-Watertown.

Erin Flynn is the Spiral Foundation’s Education Coordinator as well as a practicing Occupational Therapist at OTA The Koomar Center. Erin is a certified and licensed Occupational Therapist in the state of Massachusetts. She received her Masters in Occupational Therapy from Sacred Heart University where she was a member of the Pi Theta Epsilon honor society. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from College of the Holy Cross. She has worked with children in a variety of settings including public/private schools and Boys & Girls Clubs and has run community-based parent/child sensory motor groups. She is certified in the Program of Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration. She is also trained in the SOS oral motor program, iLs: Integrated Listening Systems home programming, and trauma informed care. She has recently completed the Infant Parent Mental Health Fellowship program at UMass Boston. Prior to moving to Massachusetts, she served on the Board of Directors of the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club in Fairfield, CT where she was the Vice President of Programming. In addition to her board duties, she facilitated staff education on accommodating the needs of club members with Autism.
