Description: Children with sensory processing challenges can present with a variety of functional challenges. Often, these challenges can be observed impacting the parent child relationship. When working with children with sensory challenges, the parent child relationship becomes an important factor to how therapists will support the family. This webinar will introduce some core principles into different theories and models such as attachment theory, mutual regulation model, and reflective thinking to broaden our understanding of the parent child relationship. Through a case study, we can explore how these principles can be clinically applied to support or enhance parent child interactions.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar viewers will be able to:
- Identify strengths and challenges within the parent child relationship through the lens of attachment theory, mutual regulation model, and reflective thinking.
- Describe how challenges in the parent child relationship impact the role of OT.
- Integrate communication strategies to support attunement and engagement between parent and child.

About the Speaker: Melanie Salort, OTR/L, is a licensed and certified occupational therapist, who has worked for much of her career with children and their families in both a clinical and teaching capacity. She is a graduate of Quinnipiac University. With a specific interest in sensory processing, Ms. Salort went on to complete WPS’s Comprehensive Program in Sensory Integration, becoming certified in the Sensory Integration Praxis Test. Since 2003, she has worked at OTA The Koomar Center (formerly known as OTA Watertown), a private clinic specializing in sensory processing, providing both evaluation and intervention to toddlers, school-age children, adolescents, and adults. Most recently, she has completed the fellowship program, Infant Parent Mental Health, through UMASS Boston broadening her knowledge and clinical application to supporting the parent child relationship.
