Description: According to best practices in Early Intervention (EI), services are provided by an interdisciplinary team.  Occupational Therapists are in integral part of the EI team. They can engage in various roles on the team such as team leader/coordinator or they can take a more supportive role. There are four key elements to successful collaboration among the team members: Building interprofessional partnerships, effective communication, active participation and promoting inclusion. This live talk will address questions surrounding the where, when, how and why to successfully implement these four key elements.

About the Speakers: Kathleen Capone, OTR/L, is an Occupational Therapist for the Connecticut Birth to Three program. She provides expertise to the child’s team in the areas of sensory processing, feeding, reflex integration and upper extremity functioning. Previously, she was the Hand Skills Coordinator and Visual Vestibular Coordinator at OTA the Koomar Center and developed training modules, provided consultation and educated families and staff. Ms. Capone has over 18 years of experience working with children and adolescents in home, school, and clinic settings since graduating with a Bachelor of Science in OT from Quinnipiac University, where she graduated cum laude.

Nikki Beatty, M.S. SpED., BCBA, LBA, attended James Madison University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Nikki worked as an Early Intervention Associate for Connecticut’s Birth to Three program while earning her Master of Special Education with a concentration in Autism Spectrum Disorders from Southern Connecticut State University. She discovered that her passion resides with supporting families and their children with disabilities and problem behaviors. In 2015 she attended Western Connecticut State University where she completed the Certificate Program for Applied Behavior Analysis and received her Board Certified Behavior Analyst designation. Nikki has worked with a multitude of children from the age of 12 months through elementary school students with varying diagnoses, particularly children with autism. Nikki has had the opportunity to work with children in both school and early intervention home based settings. Presently, she works as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst for Connecticut’s Birth to Three program in several capacities, including creating and implementing behavior intervention plans, training staff on the implementation of strategies and principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), as well as skill programming for the autism specific program.
