Description: ‘Facilitating Sensory Integration and Language in Autism,’ will address the relationship between sensory processing and language development. As many parents and therapists know, when you move you can speak; the provision of sensory inputs can promote language production. This presentation will provide fun, movement-based interventions, designed for use by parents, teachers, and therapists in the home and at school, to help promote language functioning.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this webinar viewers will be able to:

  1. Identify and support language skills utilizing sensory integration principles.
  2. Identify and engage children in appropriate sensory motor activities that support language skills.
  3. Describe the relationship between language and sensory processing in children with autism.

Course Level: Introductory. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Suitable For: Occupational therapists, OT assistants, physical therapists, PT assistants and students, speech and language therapists, parents, teachers, teacher aides, and paraprofessionals.

About the Speaker: Sarah Friel, MA, CCC-SLP trained as a speech therapist in London, UK, where she gained her professional degree at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She gained her post-professional masters in Philosophy and Linguistics at the University of London. Over the last 23 years her career has been focused on pediatric caseloads in a wide variety of settings such as schools, hospitals and in-home therapy. Before moving to the USA, Sarah was an assistant professor of speech pathology at the university of Reading, UK, and senior specialist SLP in cleft palate, and craniofacial disorders at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, London. She moved to the USA in 2004 where she taught and conducted research in pre-school education at the University of Virginia. Sarah is trained in the Hanen© programs:  ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ and ‘Learning Language and Loving It’ and is passionate about working with families in a functional way to improve communication skills at home and at school.
