SPIRAL Members: This LiveTalk is lesson 1 in the 2023 LiveTalk Series: Mentoring in the Art of Therapy course

Description: The relationship between client and therapist is the cornerstone on which all occupational therapy interventions are founded. When client-therapist relationships are strong and center on trust, mutual respect, empathy, and shared goals, outcomes are positive. In this LiveTalk, we will explore the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship and its multifaceted role within Ayres Sensory Integration®; serving not only as a foundation for intervention, but also as a means by which therapeutic change occurs. Our speaker-mentor will share strategies for building rapport, establishing a safe environment, setting therapeutic intentions, and founding and maintaining a therapeutic alliance throughout the intervention process. Time for question and answer with our speaker-mentor will be provided.

Learning objectives: By the end of this LiveTalk participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the therapeutic alliance.
  2. Understand the role of the therapist-client relationship in the outcome of intervention.
  3. Identify strategies for developing and maintaining the therapeutic relationship.

By the end of this series participants will be able to:

  1. Describe what it means to be child-led.
  2. Identify ways to establish safety and trust with clients using a sensory integration-based framework.
  3. Define the ‘just-right’ challenge
  4. Identify when a therapeutic activity requires modification.
